Trying new things

I have currently been immersing myself in music with an acoustical background as a way to help keep motivated in learning the guitar. In doing so, I have also discovered a few musicians/bands that I had heard of but never really took an interest in. It's funny how one day you can know about something but not really have an interest in it and the next be somewhat obsessed about it. And that's what this post will be about.

Over the past few weeks I have picked up two Jason Mraz CDs and two The Shins CDs. Now, I knew who both of these people were, I just never really had any interest in them. I had heard and could even sing "The Remedy" but didn't run out and buy the CDs. I had heard The Shins on the campus station and even on some random movies/TV shows. I was missing out.

How many times have you been told a movie, book or piece of music was the greatest but, for whatever reason (mine personally is that I have a bad habit of not wanting to like things that an average person does), you didn't didnĂ‚’t want to listen? This phenomenon reaches into so many different areas of life. Food is a great example. "Hey, I went to such and such restaurant and it was so good. You have to go try it." Yet when it comes time to go out to eat, where do you go? Spanky's, because it's safe or Whataburger, or Chick-fil-A, or wherever.

I recently did this with the DaVinci Code. I worked in a bookstore for two years and recommended it to people all the time, yet I only read it a month ago(see previous review). Why did I wait so long? Well, it seemed like it might be a fad, and every average non-reader had picked it up and I just didn't want to join the masses.

So, I guess the whole point of this post is really just to tell everyone to open their minds to new possibilities. With the internet, we noopportunity opertunity to preview things before we buy them, and this should really make us look at things we might not have before.

That is all,

Newt

I should have known that you bought that damn The Shins CD we were listening to yesterday.

Diana, don't get mad at Trinity for buying the Shins albums. They are fantastic and he can't help that he is trying to listen to good music.

Trin, I don't know about the first Mraz album, but the second is one of those albums that has some really good songs and some bad (though not as bad as Everything). But, if you want a really, really good acoustic-type album, you need to go buy Gavin DeGraw's Chariot. His two hits from the album are probably the worst songs on the album.
